Academic Probation Policy

Policy Statement

The reasons a student will be placed on academic probation are the following:

  1. Repeating the year for academic reasons
  2. Failure to maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined in the Good Standing and Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.

Probation status may have financial aid implications and consequences. When students are placed on academic probation and are financial aid recipients, they must complete a Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) contract with USC Financial Aid as they are being awarded additional funding beyond what is normally required to complete the MD degree  SAP_grad.pdf (usc.edu). Academic Probation status is reviewed and tracked by the Student Performance Committee.

Policy Requirement

At the time a student is placed on academic probation, the student will be informed by the Student Performance Committee (SPC) the reason for probation, the terms of probation, the duration of probation, and any other matters deemed pertinent. The student will meet with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to review the policy and implications of the probation or lack of progression. The fact that a student was placed on Academic Probation will be included in the student’s Medical Student Performance Evaluation.

Students will be removed from Academic Probation upon successful remediation of the deficiency.
