Assessment and Supervision of Student Performance by Healthcare Providers

Policy Statement

The KSOM health professionals who provide health and psychiatric/psychological services to a medical student cannot be involved in the academic assessment or promotion of the medical student receiving those services.

Policy Requirement

Health professionals who have provided health care services to a medical student or are currently providing health care services to a medical student cannot participate in the assessment or supervision of that student in any venue, including but not limited to, a course, clerkship, or performance committee.

Procedure

All health professionals must recuse themselves from any role in assessment or supervision of any medical students for whom they have provided medical care. If assigned to assess or supervise a student for whom a health professional has provided care, the health professional must notify the course or clerkship director as soon as is possible of the need for reassignment and must indicate on any related evaluation forms that he/she must recuse themselves from evaluating that student.

Students may contact the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to request reassignment if they have been placed under the supervision of a health professional from whom they have received care.
