Learning Communities and Lounge Guidelines

The learning community (LC) rooms are learning spaces specifically for KSOM’s first- and second-year medical students. The LCs are also used by the Curriculum Office and Office of Student Affairs for curricular activities (e.g., studying and research, lab sessions, ICM sessions, intersessions, orientations). Because the learning communities are intended primarily for instructional and study purposes, they are not available to be reserved by any group or event at any time.

The student lounges are primarily intended for student recreation and (in the case of the MCA 146 quiet lounge) study, although they may be reserved from time for time for meetings of Student Affairs-sanctioned student groups.  For information about reserving any of KSOM’s learning spaces, please visit the Room Reservations Guidelines and Audiovisual Services page.

General Rules

  • No materials may be attached to the LC lockers, lounge or LC ceilings, lighting fixtures, or walls.
  • Food and drink refuse must be discarded in the trash and/or recycling receptacles. Spilled food or drink should be cleaned immediately.  No open food or food containers will be allowed, particularly overnight.
  • Students are responsible for cleaning their LCs, lounges, microwaves, and refrigerators.  For significant spills or messes, please contact Maria Saavedra in the Office of Student Affairs KAM 100 or email maria.saavedra@med.usc.edu
  • To reduce the risk of projectile damage during earthquakes, do not place anything above or on top of the lounge refrigerators.
  • Do not move anything — including chairs, tables, computers, monitors, projectors, and models — from the learning communities or lounges into the hallways, or move items between rooms unless directed by a staff or faculty member.
    • The Los Angeles Fire Marshall determined that, for the safety of the occupants of our classroom buildings during emergencies, the hallways of those buildings must remain completely free of all obstacles at all times. However, temporary tables are allowed for limited time events provided you check with the Office of Student Affairs first and the tables are taken down immediately after use.
  • Do not disconnect the computers or displays in any of the LCs or the computer lab.
  • Students may not bring furniture or appliances into the LCs or lounges.
  • If you are going to leave valuables — like your wallet, phone, or computer — in your LC you need to lock those items in your locker.  Theft is a crime of opportunity that can be reduced through awareness and prevention. Whether you’re at school or at home, taking a few precautions will lower your risk of becoming a victim.
  • Pets are not allowed, with the exception of service animals. Please refer to the University’s Pets on University Property policy.

Students who violate these guidelines (or the other policies spelled out in the Student Handbook) will be referred to the Student Performance Committee.

Lost & Found
Check for lost items in BMT 106, the Public Safety Office in the parking structure, and the Office of Student Affairs.

Med Student Lounges
All currently-enrolled MD students have access to three student lounges:

  • McKibben first floor game room (MCH 150) houses a large screen TV, a pool table, a foosball table, a Blu-Ray DVD player, casual furniture, two refrigerators, and a filtered water dispenser.
  • McKibben Annex first floor “quiet” lounge (MCA 146) houses café tables and chairs, casual furniture, AV equipment suitable for lunchtime lectures, one refrigerator, and a filtered water dispenser.
  • Bishop second floor (MCH 251) houses both casual furniture, a ping pong table, two refrigerators, and a filtered water dispenser.
  • LA General Medical Student Lounge is located in the Inpatient Tower, 5th floor, Room C5C105/5R125 and is available for students on clinical rotations at LA General. Your LA County access card will let you in. There are lockers, computers and a mini fridge for your use.

Printers
There are two multifunction printers (scanner, fax, copier) in the MCH 151 computer lab. Additional printing can be purchased in the library or done at home.

Secure Document Shredding
To protect student and our patient privacy, Student Affairs and the Educational Technologies office have placed secure File Keepers document bins in the computer lab and second floor (ping pong) lounge. Any documents placed in these bins will be transported to a secured offsite location, destroyed, and recycled (see https://filekeepers.com/los-angeles-file-shredding/).

Refrigerators
Refrigerators are located in every student lounge.

Restrooms
In Bishop, Mudd, and MCA, restrooms are located next to or behind the elevators on all floors except basement.  In Bishop, there are restrooms by stairwells at the south end of building in the basement and on 2nd, and 3rd floors. Large restroom facilities with showers are available in McKibben Annex. Gender neutral restrooms are located in BMT (across from B-11, outside of 104A, and outside of 204B) and MCA (to the left of the entrance to 149 or 249).
