General Surgery
The General Surgery Clerkship is an intensive six-week rotation.  The goal of this clerkship is to provide students with a comprehensive team-based experience in which they learn basic trauma, critical care and general surgery principles.  The emphasis is on the development of clinical problem-solving skills with the aim of helping students develop not only as a technician, but more importantly to build a solid cognitive knowledge base and critical thinking skills. This goal requires active participation in an appropriate blend of clinical and self-educational activities throughout the clerkship.

Students will rotate on one of the Acute Care Surgery services (ACS A, B, C, or D) and the other three-week block on one of the General Surgery Services (Colorectal Surgery; GI Surgery; Hepatobiliary Surgery; Minimally Invasive Surgery; Vascular Surgery; or Breast, Endocrine and Soft Tissue Surgery). The three weeks on Acute Care Surgery will take place at LA General Medical Center.  During the other three weeks, students may rotate at Keck Hospital of USC or LA General Medical Center.  The clerkship faculty and support team strive to provide students with a stimulating and unique learning experience and are committed to offering students the support necessary for them to grasp a firm understanding of general surgery and to excel in the surgical arena as a third-year medical student.
