Affiliation Agreement Policy

Policy Statement:

It is mandatory that written affiliation agreements be established and maintained between KSOM and any clinical affiliates used regularly for required clinical experiences within the MD program.

  • An affiliation agreement is required for all inpatient sites used for required clerkships.
  • An affiliation agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is required for any ambulatory site that plays a significant role in the required clerkships, as defined as 10 or more students rotating at the site per academic year.

Policy Requirements:

All affiliation agreements and MOUs must contain the following elements:

  • The assurance of medical student and faculty access to appropriate resources for medical student education.
  • The primacy of the medical education program’s authority over academic affairs and the education/assessment of medical students.
  • The role of the medical school in the appointment and assignment of faculty members with responsibility for medical student teaching.
  • Specification of the responsibility for treatment and follow-up when a medical student is exposed to an infectious or environmental hazard or other occupational injury.
  • The shared responsibility of the clinical affiliate and the medical school for creating and maintaining an appropriate learning environment.

Procedure:

Affiliation agreements and MOUs for the MD program are established, maintained and renewed through the Office of Medical Education under the direction of the Vice Dean for Medical Education. Final approval of affiliation agreements and MOUs rests with the Office of General Counsel.
