Policy Statement

The Keck School of Medicine recognizes formative assessment and feedback as critical components of students’ professional growth and development.

Policy Requirement

Formative assessment and feedback are required for all courses, clerkships, electives and selectives four weeks or greater in duration. Formative feedback must be delivered to the student by the mid-point of the course or rotation. Course faculty are responsible to provide a means of student formative assessment for courses, clerkships, and electives less than four weeks in duration.

Process

  1. All courses, clerkships, electives and selectives must provide formative assessment by the mid-point of the course or rotation.
  2. Formative assessment will not become part of the student’s permanent record, nor will it be recorded in the MSPE.
  3. Formative assessment may include, but is not limited to, quizzes, thought questions, practice exams, audience response systems and direct-observation feedback.
  4. The MECC will monitor compliance with the completion of formative assessment on an annual basis.
