Policy Statement

The Keck School of Medicine recognizes narrative assessment as a critical component of student evaluation and professional development.

Policy Requirement

  1. Narrative assessment is provided in any course or clerkship where the Medical Education Curriculum Committee has determined that there was sufficient time and instructor-student interaction to permit this form of assessment.
  2. Formative narrative assessment is solely to provide feedback to students and will not be included as part of the final course or clerkship grade and not reported in the MSPE.
  3. Summative narrative assessment will be included as part of the final course and clerkship grade and reported in the MSPE.
  4. The MECC will monitor compliance with the completion of narrative assessments on an annual basis.
