Keck School of Medicine MD Program Policy on Students Needing Access to Healthcare Services

Policy Statement

The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) permits students to be excused from educational experiences to seek needed healthcare.

Procedure

  1. Medical students requesting to be excused to access health services must be excused from any class or clinical activity in order to obtain care.
  2. Students must follow the Attendance and Absence Request Policy in order to be excused from required activities.
  3. In the case of an acute health issue, the student needs to inform the course or clerkship office and their supervising faculty member and/or resident as soon as is possible.
  4. Missing an examination secondary to students needing to access healthcare must be approved in advance by the Assistant or Associate Dean for Student Affairs (unless an acute health issue) per KSOM examination policies
  5. Required sessions or clinical activities missed secondary to students needing to access healthcare must be made up at a later date as determined by the curriculum office, course or clerkship director.
  6. Students with confidential requests can discuss their concerns with the Assistant or Associate Dean for Student Affairs who can facilitate absences as appropriate.
