Keck School of Medicine MD Program Resident as Teacher Policy

Policy Statement

All residents who teach and assess Keck School of Medicine students must understand the School of Medicine educational objectives and policies as they relate to clinical activities of Keck students.

Policy Requirement

Residents are required to participate in training sessions where they will learn about educational objectives, and teaching and assessment methods pertaining to teaching KSOM students. Residents’ teaching skills will be evaluated by students and faculty. Residents who are identified as needing specific development of teaching and/or assessment skills will be referred to their program director for remediation.

Process

  • Resident as Teacher policies are distributed to affiliate residency program directors or site directors annually.
  • Annually, Keck School of Medicine faculty will offer instruction to USC residents and residents at affiliated sites on teaching and assessment methods, expected professional attributes of students, and KSOM objectives in-person or via Zoom. Participation in these workshops is documented and centrally monitored by the CQI and compliance administrator.
  • If a residency program provides its own Residents as Teachers training, the program director must attest annually that the residents receive the required training.
  • Occasionally, residents may require remediation and additional training in order to strengthen teaching or assessment skills. Remediation is accomplished through a cooperative effort between the Keck School of Medicine Department of Medical Education and the appropriate residency program.
