Keck School of Medicine MD Student Admission with Advanced Standing and Transfer Students Policy

Policy Statement

Advanced Standing

Admission with advanced standing in the Keck School of Medicine is only granted to students admitted to the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Program Advanced Specialty Certificate Program who meet certain criteria.

Transfer Students

KSOM does not accept transfer students.

Process for Advanced Standing

Students must apply for admission with advanced standing through the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Program Advanced Specialty Certificate Program (OMFS) offered in conjunction with the Ostrow School of Dentistry.

To be admitted to the program, applicants are screened by the faculty of the Ostrow School of Dentistry.

Candidates are forwarded to the Keck School of Medicine Office of Admissions for consideration. Candidates are interviewed by the Evaluation and Recruitment Committee and final decisions for admission are made by the Keck School of Medicine Admissions Committee.

In order to receive advanced standing, OMFS candidates must take and pass the NBME Comprehensive Basic Science Examination, demonstrating competency in the foundational basic sciences taught  in the Foundations of Medical Science systems in order to be excused from those systems and admitted with advanced standing.
