Keck School of Medicine MD Student Graduation Requirements Policy

Policy Statement:

Medical students must successfully complete the requirements stated below in order to be granted the doctor of medicine degree from the Keck School of Medicine.

Requirements for Graduation:

  1. Students must meet all curricular requirements applicable to their graduation year.
  2. Students must be in academic and professional good standing.
  3. Students must satisfy all fiscal requirements prior to graduation as referenced in the University’s Obligation for Payment Policy.
  4. All graduation requirements must be completed within six years from the date of matriculation unless granted an extension by the Student Performance Committee.
  5. The Student Performance Committee must approve the granting of all MD degrees.

Students will be responsible for ensuring that they have completed curricular requirements and may verify their status and eligibility with the Registrar.

Fiscal Requirements for Graduation

Per the University’s Obligation for Payment policy, all tuition and fees must be paid in full before students can receive their diplomas.

Signing out before Graduation

Graduating students must complete a sign-out process prior to graduation. A sign-out form will be provided and must be completed and returned to the Registrar before the student’s diploma will be released. Students must present verification that they have been cleared by all entities listed on the sign-out form.

Procedure:

Graduation Dates, Diplomas, and Commencement Ceremony

A student will be awarded the graduation date for the term in which all degree requirements have been met. Although course work may have been completed in a prior term, the degree will be awarded only for the term for which all academic and administrative requirements have been fulfilled.

The Registrar will conduct a degree check on each senior student in October and March of their final year and will notify students of their deficiencies and expected degree completion date.

University graduation dates are in May, August and December.  The commencement ceremony is held in May of each year. May and August graduates may participate in the ceremony of that year. December graduates may participate in the ceremony of May the following year.
