Keck School of Medicine MD Student Professionalism At Risk Policy

Policy Statement:

A student may be designated at risk for Professional Behavior Probation at the discretion of the Student Performance Committee (SPC) or the Associate Dean for Student Affairs based on a specific behavior or pattern of behaviors that demonstrate a lapse or lapses in the student’s professionalism. This designation is meant to alert the student to concerns regarding their lack of adherence to KSOM professional standards and to give them an opportunity to avoid additional lapses of professionalism and placement on Professional Behavior Probation.

Policy Requirements:

The following list is included as possible examples of patterns that might warrant placing a student in the at risk category.

  1. Three or more documented incidents of submitting assignments late.
  2. Two or more unexcused absences.
  3. Three or more instances of lack of response to a university email within 48 hours (with the exclusion of weekends and approved vacation days).
  4. Three or more instances of documented tardiness for required activities.
  5. One documented instance of lack of respect toward a peer, faculty, staff or patient (must be minor as defined by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs).

Professionalism at risk designation is not included in the student’s MSPE

Process:

Professionalism at risk designation

  • Students may be placed at risk for Professional Behavior Probation by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs or the SPC if they demonstrate a pattern of behaviors or a specific behavior that warrants concern, education and/or monitoring.
  • Students placed “at risk” are reviewed annually, or as needed, by the SPC to determine if this status can be removed or should be escalated based on subsequent behaviors.
