SC CTSI Services – Voucher Program 

Application Deadline: Continuous

Description of the Voucher Program
Vouchers are offered by the SC CTSI to purchase services and/or access core resources to generate new data for development of clinical and/or community research projects. Vouchers may be used to:
– add new data collection to an existing (“parent”) clinical or community project to develop new research that is distinct from the aims of parent project.
– collect information de novo, outside the context of an existing project, to support development of new clinical and/or community research.

Eligibility
– Full-time faculty members at USC and CHLA are eligible to apply.
– Postdocs, residents, fellows, students, and community members can serve as co-investigators, but a faculty principal investigator must be identified for the application.
– Special consideration will be given to junior investigators and applicants from underrepresented minority groups.

Conducting Research at Keck Hospital – gaining CERNER & other computer access

Once a student identifies a mentor with whom to complete research at Keck Hospital, the student must complete the following steps prior to beginning work on the project.

  • Student must visit the GME Office located on the 1st Floor of Keck Hospital, Room 1119 (meeting will take about 10 minutes)
  • Student must bring the following to the GME Office:
    1. Student ID
    2. Verification of current flu shot, if flu season (October to March – no exceptions)
    3. Copy of IRB with student’s name on the study
    4. Letter from research preceptor indicating the student’s role with the study, start and end date, and level of CERNER access requested
  • The student will be instructed to complete the following:
    1. Registration form (basic demographics)
    2. IT Form 1 (a promise to use IT systems compliantly)
  • Once student has access to their MedMail account, student will need to complete the assigned modules in HealthStream, as follows:
    1. USC Compliance
    2. USC HIPAA
    3. On-line “view only” Cerner module (if will be accessing Cerner)

Conducting Research at LA County Hospital – gaining ORCHID access

MS1 students are required to attend a VIEW ONLY ORCHID training course in September/October.  The training is good for 2 years.  Once training is completed, students are granted access to ORCHID. For any login-related issues, please contact the Office of Student Affairs.

Conducting Research at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) – gaining required access

  • Students must contact the CHLA Medical Education Office at least 4 weeks prior to their research start date.
  • Students who will be working in the Saban Research Institute (TSRI) or the Smith Research Tower (SRT) will require Lab Safety Training (training may be waved in the event that you have received training prior, and it has not expired – please alert us if you have done the CHLA Lab Safety Training before and when).
  • All students will need to provide up-to-date immunization records and contact information to be given a badge and access to the hospital.
